Local Farmers Market @ Wells, Somerset

Impressive Wells Cathedral

Every Wednesday is Market Day in Wells…at least that is what our Frome Saturday organic veggie guy told us. So the 3 hounds piled into the trusty Land Rover and made a bee line for the pretty village of Wells.

Harts Natural Seafoods @ the Market – Looking Good….

And lo & behold, our veggie man was right (he was there too) and the market square was filled with about 20 or so vendors, each stall plying an array of very attractive produce that ran the gamut of delicious looking baked goods to fresh as caught fish.

We have been a customer of Harts Natural Seafoods several times since moving to Frome just a couple of weeks ago. We’ve sampled the Hake – excellent – and the Haddock – very flavourful fish. They are in Frome on Wednesdays & Saturdays but also make an appearance in Glastonbury on Tuesdays, Bradford-on-Avon on Thursdays & on Friday they are to be found in Shepton Mallet & Warminster. Very fresh fish at very reasonable prices.

Cheese Please!

Always a tough one to pass a good cheese stall and after you’ve sampled some of the wares, you gotta buy…at least we do. And some of our favourites were on hand @ the Wells Market including Wootton Organic Dairy who we became ‘food friends’ with at the Bridport Farmers Market. And a recent taste pleaser to our cheese box has been Glastonbury Dairy who are one of the few cheese makers permitted to make cheese from unpasteurized milk (adds a whollop of flavour). And it was fun to come across some of Gould’s and Westcombe cheddars as we had just been to a talk on Somerset cheeses put on by the Frome Food Group where they were both highlighted as excellent producers.

Autumn Veggies

And the veggies were in grand form too – much of the late Autumn harvest making a colourful display and tempting purchase. The brussel sprouts were looking at the peak of their form, the squash in plentiful supply and a pack of root vegetables were ready for a stew.

English Apples – Perfecto!

It is now English Apple Time – yippeeeee! Cannot get much fresher than this nor more tasty…

A Hot Drink On A Chilly Day….

And for some odd reason Wells was a couple of notches more frosty than Frome when we left it so a hot drink and a couple of pastries (already eaten by picture time) were in order…

Get to these markets folks and support your local producers…

Shameless Plug for New eBook – ‘Dog Down Under’

Good Looking Boy!

Alex, Billie and I used to live in Melbourne. Before we moved back to the UK, we did one last trip around Australia. Travelling in Australia with a dog can be challenging (you can’t go into National Parks and they are banned from a lot of beaches, or have to be on leash a lot of the time) and we found that the further we were from the big cities, the better our experience. Alex wrote up those experiences for an eBook called Dog Down Under.

It is FREE and a very good read and the photos are stunning & Billie an awesome poser…so have a read.

We Have Chosen A Winner – Me!

I like to enter as many or most of the UK’s Guardian newspaper’s food contests. My partner makes fun of me as in I’ll never win because Londoners are up early & get the Guardian way before me & will have already entered & won. Well, this is the second, I repeat SECOND food contest I have won.

And what a good contest to win – a set of The Dip Society’s luscious & awesome looking dips. We will enjoy these immensely & hope you do the same by either visiting their web site (link is in the name) or tacking them down to a good store or deli near you. Get dipping….
