A Visit to the Oamaru Farmers Market…

The end of the line for the Alps to Ocean / Mackenzie Country Adventure was the sweet town of Oamaru & our timing was perfect so as to be there for a visit to the Sunday Farmers Market. Being quite involved with the Lyttelton Farmers Market, I always find it informative and valuable to visit other markets and have some good chats with stallholders and market managers.

Though not as big as the Lyttelton Farmers Market, the Oamaru Farmers Market ticked all the core boxes: 2 veggie stalls, 1 fruit stall, a butcher (Campbells Butchery), 2 bakers (Moa & Harbour Street), a fresh milk stall (The Natural Dairy) and to cap it off they had the Whitestone Cheese folks on board. A great market shopping experience…

And the best part of the market for me was the chance to meet & talk with Thaka Mandiwona, the market manager and Lucianne White who founded the market 10 years ago. All farmers markets have similar challenges & hiccups and it is always a valuable experience to hear about & learn from other markets. We do not need to reinvent the wheel all on our own…
